My favorite car and first love was a 1962 chevy luv truck. It had a big
camper on the back and 16 inch rims. Except for it's color (pee yellow) it
was a great car. I even had a disco ball in the back.

LOL, great comments above. I didn't have a car in the 60's but my older
siblings did. My favorites were my brothers 67 Pontiac Le Mans convertible
and his '69 GTO Judge both metallic green. Oh yeah and his white '62 Impala
was way cool. Some older friends cars:'65 Malibu 283,'69 Firebird, '69 SS396,
'63 Impala. Those were the cars on which I learned to drive. I miss the '60s.

The car with the boat prop was called "Amphicar" - I believe. A friend
of mine and I wanted to buy the one we saw for sale, but of course never
did. I have seen them on (in) Alum Creek State Park reservoir. They do
work.

My first car was a 10 year old 1954 Mercury. It was red with a black top
and a white leather interior. Everyday when I drove it to school I had to
carry a couple of gallons of water to put in the radiator about 1/2 way to
school. I finally sold it because it needed head gaskets and I couldn't afford
the $75. it would take to fix it because I was getting married. And besides
my future husband had a 1958 Chevy. That was cooler!

My dad was into imported cars in the 50's through the 70's, and a huge
car nut. He started the decade out with 3 cylinder, 2 stroke SAABs. (Take
a look at my home page as I have some pics of those, plus some neat 50's/60's
car artwork done by some friends.) In 1965, he bought a new Mercedes Benz
190D (diesel) which he purchased for $3750. It had a sticker of slightly
over $4000 if I recall. The dealer on Long Island, NY was also a Studebaker
dealer, as back then, Studebaker was the US importing agent for Mercedes.
In those days, MB didn't load the US cars up with options the way they do
now, and this 190D was so stipped, it had rubber floor covering rather than
carpeting, and didn't even have a radio until my dad installed a Blaupunkt
AM/FM/Short wave (Stereo no less, which was pretty rare in '65!)in it. As
a kid, it was great that my dad had these "noisy" cars, as between the
"ring-a-ding" of the 2 stroke SAABs or the clatter of the diesel, I could
hear him coming a block away and get out of whatever trouble I was getting
into in time! I miss those days of fins, chrome, and being able to indentify
a make of car without having to look for a nameplate or badge.

Yes, I remember the cars of the '60s. Whether they were VWs, Corvairs,
big block muscle cars or Corvettes, they were fun because you could go out
cruising without having the feel guilty about using fuel. All that would
come later.

I was born in 1962 but, I remember a lot of things I've just read. even
though I was in my pre-teens I remember the things my brother had, for example;
bell bottom pants, head bands, necklaces with the peace sign hanging off
of it. and the long hair on the guys, and of coarse the MUSIC. I kind of
wish we still lived the way we did in the 60's. back then you really didn't
have to worry about being robbed, raped or killed especially in your own
school.I don't know about the adults back then but the teenagers were talking
more about loving each other instead of hating people. So robin to end this
message I just want to say I wish that the year 2001 was as far out and groovy
as the 60's were to you. peace, love and harmony be with
you.....always.

An ugly gray 4 door valiant belonged to my first boyfriend and future
husband of 30 years. It wasn't much of a car, but good transportation away
from prying parent's eyes. And, oh yea! just put the gear shift up in reverse
and the whole front seat was your playground. What memories!!!!!!
