The
History of Valentines Day
For the last seventeen hundred years, every February, gifts and cards expressing
love are exchanged in the name of a mysterious person named "St. Valentine."
Who is he and why do we celebrate this holiday in his name? The history of
Valentine's Day and its Patron Saint -- is but a mystery. February has long
been a month of romance as Valentine's Day, and is rooted in both Christian
and ancient Roman tradition.
Why reinvent the wheel? See some good explanations here:

Stupid Cupid (lyrics)
Sung by Connie Francis in 1958
Words and Music by Neil Sedaka and Howie Greenfield
(Mandy Moore did a re-make of this classic song in 2001 for the movie,
The Princess Diaries)
Stupid Cupid you're a real mean guy
I'd like to clip your wings so you can't fly
I'm in love and it's a cryin' shame
And I know that you're the one to blame
Hey, hey set me free, Stupid Cupid stop pickin' on me
I can't do my homework and I can't see straight
I get up every mornin' bout a'half past eight
I'm actin' like a lovesick fool
You've even got me carryin' his books to school
Hey, hey set me free, Stupid Cupid stop pickin' on me
You mixed me up but good right from the very start
Hey, go play Robin Hood with somebody else's he-a-a-art
You've got me jumpin' like a crazy clown
And I don't feature what you're puttin' down
Since I kissed his lovin' lips of wine
The thing that bothers me is that I like it fine
Hey, hey set me free, Stupid Cupid stop pickin' on me
You've got me jumpin' like a crazy clown
And I don't feature what you're puttin' down
Since I kissed his lovin' lips of wine
The thing that bothers me is that I like it fine
Hey, hey set me free, Stupid Cupid stop pickin' on me
Hey, hey set me free, Stupid Cupid stop pickin' on me
won't you be my valentinme
funny valentine
Bake a Valentine Cake for your loved one!
This is a picture of a Black
Forest Cake my son David made me in 2001, when he was 18. It was the sweetest,
most delicious cake because of the love that went into it!
Black Forest Cake (Shortcut can be to use chocolate
cake mix instead of scratch.)
INGREDIENTS
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup Kirsch
1/2 cup butter
3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon strong brewed coffee
2 (14 ounce) cans pitted Bing cherries, drained
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon Kirsch
1 (1 ounce) square semisweet chocolate
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line the bottoms of two 8
inch round pans with parchment paper circles. Sift together flour, cocoa,
baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt. Set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Beat in flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk, until combined. Pour
into 2 round 8 inch pans.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted comes
out clean. Cool completely. Remove paper from the cakes. Cut each layer in
half, horizontally, making 4 layers total. Sprinkle layers with the 1/2 cup
Kirsh.
In a medium bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Add confectioners
sugar, pinch of salt, and coffee; beat until smooth. If the consistency is
too thick, add a couple teaspoons of cherry juice or milk.
Spread first layer of cake with 1/3 of the filling. Top with 1/3 of the cherries.
Repeat with the remaining layers.
In a separate bowl, whip the cream to stiff peaks. Beat in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
and 1 tablespoon kirshwasser. Frost top and sides of cake. Sprinkle with
chocolate curls made by using a potato peeler on semisweet baking chocolate.
Red Velvet Cake (David loves this.)
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 oz. red food coloring
3 Tbls (level) cocoa
2 1/2 cups flour
1 Tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
1 Tsp salt
1 Tsp baking soda
1 Tbls vinegar
Cream shortening; beat in sugar, eggs, one at a time; beat well after each
addition. Make paste of the cocoa and food coloring; add to creamed mixture.
Add salt, flour and vanilla alternately with buttermilk, beating well after
each addition. Sprinkle soda over vinegar; pour vinegar over batter. Stir
until thoroughly mixed. Bake in 3 8-inch pans or 2 9-inch pans for 30 minutes
at 350°. Let cool completely. Cover with frosting.
Frosting:
2 packages cream cheese (3 oz. each), softened
1 Tsp vanilla
2 Cups confectioners sugar
